Mainstreaming Innovation Project Launch at Abertay

A consortium of nine Scottish universities, led by Glasgow Caledonian University, will deliver a joint one-year pilot project "Mainstreaming Innovation". The project aims to reduce carbon emissions through research and application of integrated sustainable infrastructure in the existing built environment that could be replicated on existing and new building estates (e.g. housing, education, healthcare and other building estates). It is a follow-up of the project CIC Start Online whose focus was on sustainable building design and refurbishment. The ouptuts of the CIC Start Online project can be searched through Knowledge Base on the project website which will remain accessible.
 

PROJECT AIMS

  1. Reduce carbon emissions through research and application of integrated design, refurbishment and management of sustainable infrastructure within the built environment that could be replicated on existing and new building estates (e.g. housing, education, healthcare and other building estates) 
  2. Adapt to changing climate by strengthening the resilience of buildings and infrastructure, and by reducing fuel poverty
  3. Mitigate the impacts of changing climate by influencing the development of skills and capacities for planning, designing, procuring, managing and maintaining low carbon built environment
  4. Ensure security of supply of energy and resources by maximizing the use of local low carbon resources and independence of supply systems
  5. Develop methods of ensuring that innovations are presented to building owners/clients, industry and colleges.

ACTIVITIES

 The project will support development, testing and application of innovative low carbon technologies for improving

  1. landscaping and biodiversity,
  2. energy efficiency in existing buildings,
  3. energy generation from renewables, storage and decentralized systems,
  4. water harvesting, saving, recycling and flood prevention,
  5. waste reduction, reuse and waste-to energy,
  6. low and zero carbon transport and
  7. ICT/BMS systems for monitoring, reporting and management of low carbon infrastructure.

New technological solutions that combine different low carbon innovations to make better use of resources, close energy loops, achieve better efficiencies, reduce the need for maintenance and minimise the costs will be encouraged.

Innovations will be tested on selected existing estates for healthcare, education and housing. The applications for feasibility studies will be reviewed by an independent Advisory Panel and submitted for funding to Scottish, UK and European funding programmes.

Dissemination of the project outputs will be delivered at demonstration events in colleges whose curriculum includes courses related to the innovations that will be presented. The events will be marketed to the construction sector in collaboration with Local Construction Forums, professional and trade associations. The events will be filmed and footage used in webinars. The outputs of all the studies will be disseminated at seminars which will be filmed and transmitted online and saved as video recordings. Academics, innovators and representatives of the building estates will be invited to participate at the seminars.

The project will publish monthly E-News and a quarterly online magazine with articles on the context (legislation and policies), support (financial initiatives and other forms of support), research and best practice.

The project will be supervised by the Steering Group whose members will represent each university involved in the project.  The project will be managed by three core staff - director, administrator and IT officer.

BENEFITS

The studies will be useful to

  1. The selected estates as they will obtain information on most cost effective planning, installation and management of low carbon infrastructure and reduce energy use and carbon emissions,
  2. The occupants and/or users of the buildings in the above estates as their comfort will be increased and energy costs will decrease,
  3. Other housing, health and education estates in Scotland as the outcomes of feasibility studies will be disseminated,
  4. Scottish businesses that offer low carbon products and/or services for sustainable infrastructure as they will collaborate with universities and estates in testing and improving existing products or services, and in developing new products and services,
  5. Other businesses in low carbon technologies sector as webinars and video recordings of dissemination events can be used for continuous professional development,
  6. The colleges hosting demonstration events as they will be able to use the events and video recordings in teaching and developing low carbon skills, and establish and/or strengthen links with universities involved in the project, and
  7. The universities involved in the studies as they will demonstrate expertise available in each institution nationally and internationally through free webinars and video recordings of dissemination events, establish new links with the industry, engage in interdisciplinary studies that will strengthen collaboration between different departments and/or universities, use knowledge developed through the studies in teaching by using video recordings of the dissemination events, and publish papers on the studies and increase impact of their research on the industry, which is significant in RAE rating of HE institutions.
