The concept of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) has been brought about by encouraging a radical new way of thinking about urban drainage systems as epitomised by the Quality - Quantity - Amenity triangle.
The concept of SUDS (initially called BMPs) was identified as being the key means of addressing these problems of urban storm water management and related pollution. SUDS meet the principal objective of the Rio Earth Summit's Local Agenda 21 (...think global act local). The principle of dealing with surface water runoff at source has now been taken to heart in the development and redevelopment of surface runoff systems.
Recent projects include:
CREW - 'Implementation of Source Control for SUDS in Scotland' : Scottish Government funded project to investigate and provide recommendations for the challenges to implementation, construction, adoption and regulation of source control techniques in Scotland.
CREW - 'Critically review methodoligies to identify sources and pathways for urban diffuse pollution and identify measures/treatments with multiple benefits' : Scottish Government funded project investigating urban diffuse pollution control in Scotland and mitigation. The project will support the Scottish Government in developing policy related to improving sustainability of integrated surface water management in urban environments.
E2STORMED - 'Improvement of Energy Efficiency in the Water Cycle by the use of Innovative Stormwater Managementin Smart Mediterranean Cities' : An EU funded MED Programme investigating and implementing energy efficiencies in the urban water cycle and in buildings by promoting the use of innovative stormwater solutions such as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in Mediterranean cities.
